Scolaro Tiles

Giuseppe and Anna Scolaro

Giuseppe and Anna Scolaro emigrated from Capo d’Orlando, Sicilia, in 1949 and set up the Universal Terrazzo Tile Factory in Blinco Street in 1950. The factory produced tiles from the 1950s-1970s. Giuseppe, a skillful and talented artisan, produced a range of decorative terrazzo tiles that combine vibrant mixes of pigment and Italian marble, complex patterns and patinas. many of these tiles can be seen in Fremantle’s post war homes. After Giuseppe Scolaro ( b. 1911-1965) died in 1965, his wife Anna (1915-2001) carried on the business for the next decade.

In July 2021, Fremantle artist Penny Bovell and project manager Gabrielle Howlett produced an art installation and community exhibition ‘Underneath/Overlooked’ (at the Moores Building, Fremantle) which began as a search for the remaining houses and civic buildings still blessed with these special floors and became an exhibition that celebrated Giuseppe and Anna’s contribution to the design heritage of Fremantle.
